Who opposed the Virginia Declaration of Rights? ›

Summary. George Mason, member of a prominent Virginia family who had authored Virginia's Declaration of Rights in 1776, was one of three delegates in Philadelphia (along with fellow Virginian, Edmund Randolph, and Elbridge Gerry) who refused to sign the finished Constitution.

The Virginia Declaration of Rights was drafted in 1776 to proclaim the inherent rights of men, including the right to reform or abolish "inadequate" government. It influenced a number of later documents, including the United States Declaration of Independence (1776) and the United States Bill of Rights (1789).

The most influential of these charters of freedom was the Virginia Declaration of Rights—authored primarily by George Mason. Adopted by the Virginia House of Delegates in June 1776, the Virginia Declaration of Rights was part of the Virginia Constitution.

An apparently conventional Episcopalian, he served for many years on the vestry of Truro Parish, whose members included his neighbor George Washington.

As a delegate to the Constitutional Convention, Mason refused to sign the Constitution and lobbied against its ratification in his home state, believing the document as drafted gave too much power to a central government and was incomplete absent a bill of rights to guarantee individual liberty.

And yet, Mason's writings reveal his intense dislike of the institution of slavery. He was outspoken and consistent in his disapproval.

Rhode Island was the only state not to send delegates to the Constitutional Convention in 1787.

Some remnant of the Great Library did survive. By the time of Caracalla's depredations in AD 215, the "daughter" library in the Temple of Serapis had been completed (Caracalla residing there while in Alexandria). But even these books likely were lost when the temple was destroyed in AD 391.

However, others have confused both incidents and blamed Theophilus for simultaneously murdering Hypatia and destroying the Library though it is obvious Theophilus died sometime before Hypatia. The final individual to get blamed for the destruction is the Moslem Caliph Omar.

Suddenly, early in the 13th century appears an account reported by Ibn al-Qifṭī and other Arab authors describing how ʿAmr had burned the books of the ancient Library of Alexandria.

The Federalists opposed including a bill of rights on the ground that it was unnecessary. The Anti-Federalists, who were afraid of a strong centralized government, refused to support the Constitution without one.

The Virginia Plan was unacceptable to all the small states, who countered with another proposal, dubbed the New Jersey Plan, that would continue more along the lines of how Congress already operated under the Articles.

He also played a key part in guiding the Constitution through the Continental Congress. Playing a lead in the ratification process in Virginia, too, Madison defended the document against such powerful opponents as Patrick Henry, George Mason, and Richard Henry Lee.
