The Jersey Journal from Jersey City, New Jersey (2024)

Jury will JERSEY JOURNAL, TUESDAY, MAY 17, 1983 Jury debates if man will die for slaying NEWARK, (UPI) Thomas Ramseur, convicted last week of murdering his giritriend, does not know if he will have to die for that crime. The eight men and four women who convicted the 44-year-old Irvington man last Thursday deliberated for more than six hours Monday in a second, penalty phase" trial, trying to decide if his crime was so heinous that Ramseur deserves to die. The jury, sequestered overnight in a local hotel by Essex County Superior Court Judge David Baime, was expected to resume deliberations today at 10 a.m. If the jury decides on the death penalty, Ramseur could become the first man in New Jersey to be put to death in more than a decade. The jury convicted Ramseur of the "knowing and purposeful" murder of his grirlfriend Asaline Stokes, 54, whom he repeatedly stabbed in front of five witnesses.

including two of her granddaughters, outside her Newark home on Aug. "The jury began deliberatng Monday at 3:20 p.m. after prosecution and defense made their final attempts to sway the panel. At 8:40 p.m., the jurors sent Baime a note that said they were "unable to reach a unanimous verdict." Baime refused to allow the jury to go home. Earlier in the day, defense lawyer Dale Jones told the jurors an "eye for and eye" sense of justice would be wrong.

"An eye for an eye would leave this world blind, he said. "'That's my answer to our. statute. "By your verdict, the sole question that re-' mains for you to decide is who in fact will decide when Thomas Ramseur dies you or God," Jones said. Essex County Prosecutor George Schneider charged his opponent was playing on the sympathies of the jury.

"You are not killing anyone. There is only one person in this room who has killed and he killed twice." THE Crash kills 'Evita' actor PENNINGTON (UPI) A Broadway actor and another man were killed and two women were seriously injured in a two-car head-on collision on Route 31, police said Monday. Mark Syers, 30, of Titusville, who was a featured singer in the Broadway hit and Charles Brashier, 21, of Lawrenceville, were killed in a collision in the southbound lane of the rain-slicked highway at 7:20 p.m. Sunday, Hopewell Township police said. Two passengers in Brashier's car were injured and taken to near- Salvador killers may escape legal action SAN "SALVADOR, El Salvador (UPI), Prosecutors readied a last-ditch effort to block a court ruling that frees two wealthy Salvadorans from further legal action in the killings of two American land reform advisors.

A source close to the prosecutors said Monday an appeal was expected to be filed in Supreme Court today in the slayings of the American advisers and the director of the Salvadoran Institute for Agrarian Transformation. The AFL- -CIO advisers were Mark David Pearlman, 36, from Seattle, and Michael Hammer, 42, of Potomac, Md. The two Americans were shot to death Jan. 2, 1981, while dining in the Sheraton Hotel in San Salvador with Jose Rodolfo Viera, director of the Salvadoran institute implementing agrarian reform. The case has taken on wide political ramifications in the United States.

Congress requires that. President Reagan certify progress in the prosecution every six months in order to continue assisting the Salvadoran government. Reagan must also confirm progress on the investigation into the 1980 killings of four American churchwomen. Former national guardsmen Jose Dimas Valle Acevedo and Santiago Gomez Gonzalez confessed to the January 1981 killings and their trial should begin when the Supreme Court hands down its rulings on the other three men implicated. Valle Acevedo and Gomez Gonzalez said they were following army Lt.

Rodolfo Isidro Lopez Sibrian's orders when they shot Pearlman, Hammer and Viera, but under Salvadoran law the testimony of someone who confesses to a crime cannot be used against others. IRA kills Ulster cop BELFAST, Northern Ireland (UPI) The Irish Republican Army shot and killed a policeman outside his suburban Belfast home Monday three years after he foiled an attack on his life at the same spot. Police constable Gerry Cathcart, 49, married with two daughters aged 18 and 20, had just driven home from work and was locking his car door when his attacker walked up to him. leveled his gun and fired four shots in rapid succession. Cathcart fell to the floor, wounded in the head, and died shortly afterwards in a hospital, police said.

The gunman turned on his heels and dashed to a nearby motorcycle where an accomplice was revving the engine, one witness said. But suddenly the machine stalled. The two assailants jumped off to pushstart' the bike to make their getaway. It was all over in seconds. The incident occurred in a quiet south Belfast suburb just before 5.30 p.m.

when children and office workers were walking home to their tea. Three years ago Cathcart foiled an attack his life at the same spot when he discovered a bomb wired underneath his car. Such attacks are a common occurence for Ulster's policemen. Later Monday, the outlawed IRA issued a two-line statement saying they killed Cathcart, who woked at Belfast police headquarters.
